As we witness an ongoing and unavoidable digital disruption in this era, the skill to adapt is very much needed to remain relevant throughout our lives.

 

There is no denying that digital disruption has affected and rewired the nature of work. It has also in effect expanded the definition and the nature of the gig economy.

The term gig economy is not something new, as people have always worked gigs. In this contemporary society, when most people refer to the “gig economy”, they often mean new technology-enabled kind of work. With more people embracing the trend and hopping on the digital gig economy as a path to greater autonomy and more flexibility at work, companies are also required to adapt and explore new employment system to cater to such work opportunities.

The importance of the ability to adapt cannot be stressed enough due to the nature of work which is ever-evolving. Here’s our take on adapting to the ever changing digital gig economy.

 

Three main things Digital Gig Workers need to adapt to

  1. Adapting to the landscape of work

It is no secret that in the gig economy, work is often inconsistent. As a digital gig worker, besides the need to have impeccable skills in planning ahead – which encompasses securing jobs, meeting client’s expectations and deadlines, and planning out personal finance  – a digital gig worker would also need to embrace technology and learn to collaborate with people virtually. Technology literacy, meaning having the ability to use, manage, understand, and assess technology is a must have skill to be an effective digital worker.

  1. Adapting to the types of work

In this increasingly digitized world, technology has undoubtedly enabled change in the way we think about work and how we actually work. Adapting to different types of work means having the ability and flexibility to pick up the skills needed. In Malaysia, the eRezeki platform provides three main different types of tasks: digital micro-tasks, digital work and digitally-enabled tasks. The nature of these jobs differs from one another in terms of the level of skills required. At Supahands, we provide micro-tasks that range from image annotation, data transcription, data tagging and categorization.   1. Adapting to lifestyle change

A digital gig worker would often need to adapt to certain lifestyle changes, as he sets his own work schedule while adhering to a deadline. Sometimes, adapting to the nature of digital gig work can result in positive changes too. Based on a survey that we recently ran among our SupaAgents, it was found that 42% reported better time management. This brings us back to the importance of planning, as digital gig workers do not have a fixed schedule which allows freedom, but also requires discipline to plan their day. Therefore, this may have resulted in better management of one’s own time.

Besides better time management, 15% of our SupaAgents reportedly read more for learning, which translates to self-development. However, on the downside, results yielded have also shown that SupaAgents reported that they experienced less socialisation, decrease in slumber and did not exercise as much since adapting to life as a digital gig worker.

Brief Supahands’ history:  How we pivot and adapt

Adaptability isn’t something foreign to us over here at Supahands, it is in fact something that we stand for and have experienced as a company.

Our story

Prior to our current work, Supahands once offered virtual assistant services. However, due to the upsurgence of business-related tasks, ‘Supahands Business’ was created as a large-scale, enterprise alternative.

The pivot from a B2C to B2B business model came in 2017 when we began to grow our pool of SupaAgents and dip our toes into training data work for artificial intelligence/machine learning companies. Employees in the company had to adapt collectively as well, from Virtual Assistance to the Artificial Intelligence Industry, which was a seemingly foreign world to us then. But with the constant yearn to grow and learn, we adapted to the change that was required of us and here we are in the pursuit of building the world’s most efficient task force.   

Now, how do I get better in adapting?

As change is the only constant in life, it’s important as digital gig workers that you do not confine your ability to excel in a particular thing, you have to be good at learning how to do new things, According to Jennifer Jones, Director of Consultancy at a recruitment firm in the UK, believes that developing and having high levels of these three traits: Purpose, Inquisitiveness, and Resilience, are highly linked to adaptability and if you work on developing these characteristics, you will become more adaptable.

Jones also notes that a high level of threat will hurt one’s adaptability therefore one should try to reduce it.
